Consumption of sweet drinks has increased over the past two decades. Marketing strategies of all kind have helped them making an utterly popular household beverage especially with the kids. However of late, these have largely come under the scanner owing to their numerous harmful effects on our health. It’s time we start taking these a bit more seriously if we really care about ourselves or our loved ones.
Obesity involves being heavier than ones normal weight. It is not just a physical condition that affects your look and comfort but might also trigger a lot of health problems. I unit of sweet drink contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar. Such use of sugar can increase our weight significantly even if had in moderate quantity.
The phosphoric content in sweet drinks causes bones to lose their calcium content. This increases the risk of fractures and other bone problems like osteoporosis.
The strong acid content of cold drinks causes enamel or the upper coating of our teeth to erode. This erosion of enamel makes the inner dentine to be more visible making our teeth look yellow.
High blood pressure and heart disease
The caffeine content found in sweet drinks can cause high blood pressure and open us to higher risk of stroke.
High blood sugar
The sugar content in sweet drinks not only increases the weight but also make the people more prone to developing diabetes. Various studies have been made indicating that those with high consumption of sweet drinks are at a greater risk of diabetes than who don’t.
The ethylene glycol content found in cold drinks is directly associated with the functioning of kidney. Researches have proved that cold drink consumed in huge quantity at a stretch might lead to renal failure.
It is a common belief that having cold drinks after a heavy meal enhances digestion. However, since these drinks are cold, they slower the digestion process which is best done at a higher temperature. Also, these disturb the alkaline balance of the body causing gassiness and indigestion.
High sugar, sodium and caffeine content deplete the natural moisture of our skin making us look more aged than we actually are.
Cold drinks are addictive in nature; that is not having cold drink makes an addict feel low and need a boost by guzzling the same. Addiction of any kind is bad.
A toilet cleaner or an insecticide
Sweet drinks have added contents of chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals that they can be easily substituted with toilet cleaners or insecticides. One can well imagine the impact these have on our internal mechanism.
