10 Most Famous Faces of Doordarshan Era in India

Most of us Remember people, many of us Recall the faces and some of us recall the names. So here are 10 of the most famous Faces of Doordarshan Era of our Country, who changed the face of Indian Television forever.


There is no one in India who doesn’t know our very own cute baby Tabassum as she started her acting career in Hindi movie industry far back in 1947. Her First debut Movie was Mera Suhaag (1947) followed by Badi Behen and many more to name. She later had a successful television talk show titled, Phool Khile Hain Gulshan. Which ran for straight 21 years from late 1972-93 produced by Doordarshan Kendra Mumbai.


Shammi Narang

Born 25th November 1956 in New Delhi, India. Is known for his work as voice over artist, news anchor, emcee and entrepreneur also best known for his work in raising standards of news-casting in India. He was the well-known face of “Doordarshan news reading” during late 1970s & 80s. Nowadays the voice you heard in Delhi Metro Announcement is given by none other than Mr.Shammi Narang.


Salma Sultan

Born March 16th 1947 is well known Indian television journalist who has worked as a news anchor In Doordarshan for about 30 years straight and later started working as Director. She was also known for her signature rose tucked under her left ear in her hair. The way she used to wear her saree was so elegant and graceful that later many female newsreaders tried to copy her style. But there can be just one original, Salma Sultan.


Annu Kapoor

Now there is probably no one in the country that doesn’t know him. Kapoor is best known for the show that hosted titled “Antakshri”. He is one of those actor that has a variety of acting range that goes from as Saint Kabir in Doordarshan’s TVs serial to a Police inspector in Bollywood movie ‘7 khoon Maaf’ to a comedic villain in ‘Hum’.


Renuka Shahane

Many of you must know her as ‘bhabhi’ of Salman Khan for the movie ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ that released in 90s but let me tell you she is one of finest award winning actress of our country. Married to Ashutosh Rana, also a bollywood actor, started her career with Marathi films and later started working in popular Indian television serial titled ‘Surabhi’ and soon she started her bollywood career, But she became popular after her role in movie ‘Hum aapke hain kaun,1994’.


Siddharth Kak

He is best known as the producer and presenter of popular Hindi TV serial title ‘Surabhi’ which ran from 1993-2001 On Doordarshan TV. He not only made a popular TV serial but he also established the ‘Surabhi Foundation’ with the help of Ford Foundation and started several projects on preserving cultural artifacts. Currently he is working as the Host of Travel show ‘Indiadhanush’ on NDTV imagine.


Prannoy Roy

He is a TV/digital mogul in the country with NDTV media house. He has been with Doordarshan and BBC world news as the lead anchor for election analysis and budget specials. In addition to his career he has won several awards including ‘Television personality of the millennium’.


Vinod Dua

Many of us may know him for his trademark line that speak after having a delicious meal ‘Bahut umda sawaad’ on his food and lifestyle show on NDTV ‘ . Born march 11th 1954 is a famous media personality of India. He has been in this industry since 1974, been associated with Indian television; he went from black & white single channel entity to present day multi-channel satellite TV industry. He is a ‘Padma Shri’ awarded journalist of the country.


Alok Nath

Our very own academy award winner babuji of Indian film industry, the one and only, most respected personality Mr.Alok Nath. From working with top A list actor of bollywood varying from Salman khan to shahid kapoor, he has worked in numerous films, TV serial and much more.


Rajit Kapoor

He is also best known as Bomkesh Bakshi for his lead role as the same, and also for his award winning role as Mahatma Gandhi in the 1996s Film. He has done 100’s of film and to name few ‘Shaitaan, Kick, Roy and the recent Ki & Ka’.
