Vijay was born in a small town of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and has received Hindi medium education throughout his life. He was brilliant in studies and was always keen on innovating.
The DCE incident
Being poor in English did create a lot of troubles for him initially. He got admission to the prestigious DCE but soon realized that English medium education is creating problems for him. He started keeping a dictionary with him and used to learn from his seniors.
Vijay Shekhar Sharma was a child genius and its attributed to the fact that he got admission to DCE at an age of 15 with a special permission from the administration. Thereafter he kept excelling at the college level.
Thoughts on rural background
Sharma believes that being from a simple rural family has helped him shape his thoughts effectively. He has learnt to value things and prioritize things better.
In all success stories, there is always an element of failure at the first. Vijay too failed in his first startup which he started while in engineering college. It was called “Indiasite.net”. Then Vijay worked for a while and finally landed with his dream startup.
Creation of One97
While studying his engineering, Vijay had plans to start something big. After failing with Indiasite.net, he decided to start One97 which was basically a people search engine. He offered initial services of searching contacts through SMSs which became very popular.
Addition of Paytm
Paytm is a jewel in the crown of One97. It is India’s most famous e-wallet services which is redefining how we transact cashless. Paytm started in 2010 and is now at the GMV of 12 thousand crore and above.
Sponsoring Indian Cricket team
Paytm has spent a whooping rs 200 crore in sponsoring the Indian Cricket team for a period of 4 years as a part of its promotional campaign. It puts a young company like paytm in league with MNCs like Pepsi and Sahara.
Paytm has got funded by some big names in the industry which includes Alibaba and Ratan Tata. The confidence which the investors have in Paytm shows it is going to grow into a very big company.
Vision for the future
Vijay believes in holistic development. His vision for the future of Paytm is to make in into an internet conglomerate covering all areas. Recently Paytm has got the licence to operate as a payments bank.
