Sudarsan Pattnaik is a world renowned sand artist who (fortunately for us) was born and brought up in Orissa. India has hardly seen any contributions in this field before Sudarsan came and revolutionised the way we look at sand arts and sand sculptures. He has won many laurels and has been successful in putting India on the world map with respect to sand art. His work has inspired a lot of people including children who look up at him with a lot of inspiration and hope to become like him someday. Have a look at some of the lesser known facts about Sudarsan.
Sand art was Sudarsan’s childhood passion. He was born in the sea facing Puri district of Orissa which gave wings to his dream and he started making sand art by the age of seven. Back then his art used to attract tourists who were present at the beach. With time he gained popularity and he is world famous now.
The road less travelled
In Sudarsan’s case this may be called as taking up the road that was never travelled by anyone else. He is also called the inventor of sand art in India. While most of his friends were busy becoming Engineers and Doctors following the societal trend, Sudarsan was busy chasing his dream of making sand art.
Yes, it may sound unbelievable, but the hero of the story has not taken any formal training or has not learnt sand art from anyone. I’s just his creativity and self-learnt skills that has made him what he is today. How often do we hear someone being the best in his field by self-learning?
Institute to teach others
Everyone is not a genius like him, and that is why Sudarsan started the Golden Sand Art Institute (renamed – Sudarsan sand art institute) in Puri to help people in realizing their dream of creating something through sand. Sudarsan has depicted a lot of social evils and natural calamities through his art.
Awards and recognition
The space is to less to describe his achievements. To name a few, he has performed in over 20 countries since 1998 and has been a registered 5 times in Limca book of world record. He has been awarded the Padma Shree by the Indian government and has received awards at Moscow, Berlin, USA, Denmark, Germany, Spain and China – to name a few.
Sudarsan is a true inspiration for all of us and we wish hope he continues to make India proud like always.
