To continue competing with the likes of Google Home and Google Home Mini, Amazon India has slashed the prices of its two AI-powered smart speakers. Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot have been the only significant players in the smart speaker market right from their launch in last year. However, these products are now facing a tough competition from Google’s Smart Speakers, which are also acquiring a healthy share in the market.
Amazon’s Echo Dot, which is tinier amongst the two, has received a price cut of INR 400. This means that now you need to pay only 4,099 to get a new Amazon Echo Dot, down about 9% from its earlier price of 4,499. On the other hand, Amazon Echo has received a price cut of INR 1000, which makes INR 8,999 as its effective price.
Along with these price cuts, the ecommerce giant has added one more deal for the customers. The customers who buy two units of Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot will be getting an additional discount. For buyers of Echo Dot, an additional discount of INR 700 will be available. Buyers of Amazon Echo will get a discount of INR 1,000 on the purchase of two pieces of the same.
However, the prices of two newer and better devices, Echo Plus and Echo Spot, remain the same. Amazon Plus is available at a price of INR 14,999 and Amazon Spot is being sold for INR 12,999.
The new discounted rates of both these speakers are definitely a delight for the customers, but this is not the first time that Amazon has lowered the prices of its smart speakers. In the initial days of the launch, both the speakers were available at jaw-dropping deals as an early bird offer. While the Amazon Echo was then made available at a price of INR 6,999, Echo Dot, its tinier sibling was being sold for INR 3,149.
Another limited period offer was made available on Echo Dot when Google launched its smart speakers in India. At that time, the customers were provided a discount of INR 1000 on purchase of two Echo Dot speakers.
Both these devices are quite similar when it comes to software functionality. Both are powered by Alexa, the smart assistant from the house of Amazon. Both the devices can do some basic tasks for you like setting up alarms, dialing contacts, playing music and can even control your smart home devices like Smart Bulbs. Also, you can control your TV with these devices, if you have installed Amazon Fire TV Stick in your home.
On the hardware side, the two are significantly different. Amazon Echo has a 2.5 inch woofer and a 0.6 inch tweeter, which is loud enough to let you enjoy music in your room. Powered with Alexa, this is certainly an interesting and convenient way to enjoy music. On the other hand, Echo Dot is relatively smaller in size and will not be able to give you a loud or enjoyable music output. However, it comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack, with which you can always connect it to some other speakers to enjoy your music.
Interestingly, after the announcement of price cut, Amazon’s devices are now selling at exactly the same price at Google’s Smart Speakers. Google Home Mini and Google Home are both available on Flipkart at a price of INR 4,099 and 8,999 respectively.
Amazon was the lone leader in smart speakers market till the start of 2018. However, in recent times, it has been facing tough competition from Google’s smart speakers. According to a report a Canalys, Google shipped 3.2 million smart speakers in India during the first quarter of 2018, while Amazon shipped only 2.5 million. This eventually might just be the reason for such a price cut.
Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot Features

Its powerful speakers deliver crisp vocals and dynamic bass response. On the other hand, Amazon Echo Dot which is also a smart speaker controlled via your voice assists with all that like the Echo. Furthermore, it boasts of a built-in speaker which can be connected to external speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5 mm stereo cable. With seven microphones, beam-forming technology, and noise-cancellation, the Echo Dot can hear you even from the noisiest of environment or while playing music.
