Apurva Purohit, CEO of FM network Radio City 91.1, has put all her experience in her book ‘Lady You Are Not a Man- the Adventures of a Woman at Work’ and now the book has become a national bestseller and is currently getting translated into several regional languages.

Apurva has over 25 years of experience in managing media businesses and brands, in building superior organizations and creating valuable businesses. Having such a great experience she says life is based on your attitude and that gives you a kick. Follow your instincts keeping these in mind and you will land up where you are supposed to be.

Under graduating in physics and doing masters in management at IIM Bangalore, Apurva worked in HTA for two years, then the head of HTA moved to Rediffusion. She was asked to come along and she did. Then, one of her ex bosses called her to run Zee TV. It was a change for her – she changed advertising to managing the business of creativity. From Zee, an ex-colleague called me to run Times of India’s television segment. When Radio City was taken over by a private equity fund, someone familiar with my work, asked me to come run the show.

Apurva said she had never made a CV or resume in her life. Each job she had ever landed had been based on people who knew her calling her to take up a role. She says instead of narrowing in on career choices; focus on the things that really matter – the attitudes that shape your philosophy on life and work, your core strengths and your growth as a person.

All through her life, Apurva has been happy by ignoring battles that she could not win. What she is doing is channeling her experiences to bring about meaningful change, even if that change is slow to happen.

A line that she read in a book – You are a woman, don’t exploit it – has made her energetic all through her life. She says every day we have to try and become the best version of ourselves and this thought keeps me on my toes.
