Surely you must’ve heard of rehab for human-beings. But have you heard of a rehab-facility for animals? Well, if not, then we’d recommend you to visit Badmash Peepal – an organic farm located close to Dharamshala.
An animal-welfare group is successfully running a recovery center for stray animals of all sizes.
The farm is their space where they are working towards bringing about a change in people’s mentality and behavior for stray animals.
With all the success and goodwill Badmash Peepal has generated, it motivated them to helm another initiative – targeting stray and abandoned cows. The animal-welfare collective is focusing its energies on highlighting cow-abuse, how farmers carelessly use sticks and sickles to chase away meandering cows from entering into their fields. Fact is, the correct method of shooing away cows is by using water.
In the process of getting hit by farmers, cows often get injured, hurting themselves in the horns, getting fractures and other severe wounds.
In order to remedy the problem, the guys at Badmash Peepal have invented a solution! Their fix for this problem is to alter the behavior of farmers. For this purpose, the folks at Badmash Peepal have designed sweaters from gunny sacks for cows.
To further curb the hitting-menace, the makers have spray-painted images of Lord Krishna onto the sacks along with the phrase “Yeh gai meri hai” (“This cow is mine”).
The way Badmash Peepal sees it, “People see two authorities — law and religion,” says Robin Singh of Badmash Peepal. “It’s against the law to hit animals, but the law doesn’t always influence people, and we’re hoping that by appealing to a higher authority (spirituality), people will learn to be kinder to animals.”
What’s more, the new ‘fashion-statement’ of the cows keeps them warm against the chills of the Northern winters. Pretty cool idea, this!
