Many blind people can do considerable amount of work. The blind have remarkable talent, they can function as scientists, farmers, electricians and skilled technicians without anybody’s support. Bhavesh Bhatia, the visually impaired entrepreneur gave in all his efforts to prove that blind are part of the general public. Bhavesh Bhatia was not born blind. But after his childhood illness, he slowly lost his eyesight. It was a difficult reality to accept, but he didn’t cry over the truth. Rather he decided to live life gracefully and independently.

He joined the National Association for Blind (NAB), an organization which provides skill training to the blind. He learnt candle making, acupressure, Braille. But as he could not afford the candle moulds, thus, he joined some of Mahabaleshwar’s hotels as massage therapist and then saved money to get started with his candle making business. Bhavesh started selling candles as a street vendor in front of Holy Cross Church in Mahabaleshwar.

He and his wife took loan of Rupees 15000 from a bank and bought more raw material for making candles. They initially used their kitchen utensils to make candles. Their small steps led them towards the path of success, named as ‘Sunrise Candles’. This enterprise ‘Sunrise Candles’ consists of 225 visually impaired people. The team produces over 9000 designs of candles and has clients attached to it from many countries across the globe.

At one point of time, Bhavesh didn’t have funds to purchase wax and other necessary stuff to prepare candles, but today, his enterprise uses 25 tonnes of wax each day. Along with providing employment to the people, he also keeps interest in sports. He has taken part in National Paralympics and has won around 32 national gold medals in various events. The journey does not stop here. He and his team aspires to make a world record in near future by making 45 feet high candle-the tallest and the unbreakable candle.
