Kargil War Veteran

Major Devender Pal Singh, 39 yrs old is a Kargil war veteran. In 1999, In the Kargil War, Major D.P. Singh suffered with the multiple injuries and lost his leg. Major D.P. Singh has survived to shine as India’s only amputee marathon runner, famous as India’s Blade runner.

What Happened – The Heroic Actions

On July 8th 1999. India was taking on Pakistan in the Kargil War. Major D.P. Singh fought for India bravely. Unfortunately, he was severely injured by a mortar fired from other side of the border. Major D.P. Singh was declared dead at the Army hospital, but another doctor saved him. Major D.P. Singh not only lost his leg but he also got several injuries like Partial hearing loss of both ears and he has been operated twice for stomach and partial removal of intestine. There are around 40 shrapnel’s embedded still inside his various body parts.

Never Give up Attitude

When D.P. Singh learnt that he had lost my leg, He didn’t lose hope. He decided that this would be yet another challenge in his life. He just couldn’t get used to the sympathetic glances he used to get from people. He took it as a challenge as living like a physically challenged person was not acceptable to him.

Rigorous Training

After a year, his wounds started healing and he began to walk initially using crutches and later transitioned to a walking leg. D.P. Singh wakes up daily at 3 a.m. and it takes approx. 2 hours for him to get ready and wear prosthesis for his training. He initially hopped on his good leg and dragged the prosthetic leg. After practicing for months, he was able to hop-run for about five kilometers.

Being a Hero again

Major D.P. Singh managed to run two half marathons by hopping and dragging his prosthetic leg but Singh improved his timing by 45 minutes in each attempt. Later, he Singh got to know about the fiber blade prosthetic from South African blade runner Oscar Pistorius. Major D.P. Singh has participated in 14 marathons so far and decided to be an Indian Blade runner.

Achievements so Far

Major D.P. Singh has become an inspiration to all war veterans. He is a double Limca record holder to run on an artificial lamb along with severe disabilities.  He has successfully completed 8 half marathons. Major D.P. Singh is a passionate speaker on motivation and has been admired by companies like Infosys, Ernst and Young, SAP, TED Talk, Intuit India and many more. He is also known as India’s blade runner.

Plans for Future

Running a marathon and representing India at the Olympics are the top agenda for Major D.P. Singh. His personal best for Half Marathon is 2 hours and 40 minutes and he is continuously working on improving it. We would like to say thanks for being an inspiration for everyone and a National Hero.
