Very few of you would know that it was Tom Alter who did first ever video interview of Sachin Tendulkar

We know Tom Alter as Hindi film actor. Apart from Hindi films he has been involved with theatre as well. He has acted in films like Charas, Shatranj Ke Khilari, Kranti, Gandhi, Karma and many others. You may not know that this legendry actor was once a sports journalist.

A native of Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India, Tom did teach at St. Thomas school in Jagadhri (Haryana) for $50 a month. After working as a teacher he started as sports coach and later turned to be sports journalists. He wrote for many newspapers and magazines for about a decade.

He has a special connection with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. When Tom was a sports journalist, sometime in the year 1988, India’s greatest batsman Sunil Gavaskar told Tom about Sachin Tendulkar. This was the first time when Tom heard about Sachin.

After hearing praise about a young batsman from Gavaskar, Tom wanted to see this boy. While shooting a sports film Tom was interviewing former Indian Cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar. At that time, Sachin was playing in the nets.

Vengsarkar introduced Tom with Sachin Tendulkar. Tom got a chance to do the first ever interview of Sachin Tendulkar. Tom recalls:

“I clearly remember the interaction. It was his first video interview. I wouldn’t say he was naive, but rather innocent and soft spoken. Though a little shy in front of the camera, the boy was very confident without being a show-off.”

Sachin talked about his heroes Sunil Gavaskar and Vivian Richards. Sachin was their fan because he said both of them play their natural game.

While interviewing Sachin, Tom was impressed with Sachin’s confidence. “The confidence with which he did it most actors would take three or four takes for that.”

Tom believes that “I guess the only difference today is that he speaks a little more than he used to then. The style of speech has not changed at all in the last 25 years.”
