Many people in our society misunderstand the teachings – Muslim girl wins Gita contest

Maryam Asif Siddiqui

Maryam Asif Siddiqui is a 12 year old girl from Mumbai. She’s student of Cosmopolitan High School in Mira Road and studying in class Std VI. At a recent contest – ‘Gita Champions League’ – organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in the city, which saw 4,617 students participating from 195 schools, the first prize was bagged by Maryam Asif Siddiqui. She is a rank holder at the exams in school.

Teachers at school are proud of Maryam’s achievement. “The contest is open to students from all religions so we asked if anyone from school wanted to participate. Maryam is excellent at school exams and she showed the same excellence at this contest too,” said her teacher, Sapna Brahmandkar.

She competed against more than 4000 participants in the Gita Champions League which was organized by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) in January.

The 100 mark multiple choice questions based test, evaluated children on their knowledge of the Gita. Maryam studied material that was provided by Iskcon for almost a month before giving the test in English.
