The film is an inspirational love story about a Delhi university student and aspiring writer afflicted with cerebral palsy (disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth), who leaves India for New York University, where she falls for a fiery young activist.
Laila (Kalki Koechelin) is a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. She is a student at Delhi University and an aspiring writer who writes lyrics and creates electronic sounds for an indie band at the university. She gets admitted to New York University and moves with her mother (Revathy). Living in Manhattan, she falls in love with fiery young activist Khanum (Sayani Gupta). Thus she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery which hinders the relationships between her family and friends.
The movie ‘Margarita with a straw’ has received accolades from film critiques and reviewers, who called it an ’emotionally direct study of disability and sexuality’.
The film’s director, Shonali Bose, has also been praised for handling issues of a student, Laila’s, refusal to let cerebral palsy interfere with her life and love, with dignity.
