Harish Sadani started MAVA- Men against violence and Abuse in 1993, which is voluntary social organization and violence on women. It’s main purpose is to snub the criminal activities, harassment and degradation on women.
Gender based violence on women is still prevalent in our society. MAVA is here to bring some real positive changes in the traditional mindset of people. Harish believes that violence and abuse on women is a Human Rights issue which creates serious effects on women’s mental and physical health. MAVA launched its new initiative ‘Yuva Maitri’ or friendship among youths with a vision of giving women the equal treatment and not think of them as subordinates.Yuva Maitri involved young people between 18-20 age group from colleges and rural communities possessing leadership qualities to become communicators.
These trained communicators gives other men comfort zone to share their problems and thoughts and helps them calm down. The initiative has reached up to 20000 young men and 5000 young women through interactive awareness sessions. MAVA is now working on creation of a movement addressing the gender issues of our society wherein men plays the character of ‘partners’ and ‘stakeholders’. It will also include issues of women empowerment through cultural advocacy, direct intervention and youth education initiatives. MAVA functions differently from traditional methods to tackle gender based violence on women.
Harish sadani has been honored by many awards till now for his efforts to improve the society. He has been given prestigious Maharashtra Foundation award in 2010. From IBN, he has got Muktaa Sanman Award and also Karmveer Puraskar Award. Due to MAVA’s initiatives, young boys and girls have an easy and comfortable communication with each other and also teasing and harassment on girls have decreased.
