Not many would have thoughts like Shrikant. Yes he is unique!!. When many students who graduate from Indian Institutes of Management or IIM’s hold top positions in life one Mr Shrikant Gajbhiye has done what his friends may not have thought in their dreams. Shrikant had launched Founder of Bee The Change. The objective of this organization is to provide bee keeping training to the farmers and forest populations in Maharashtra.
It was said that sudden drop in the bee population had created an imbalance in the ecosystem with drastic effects. According to Shrikant keeping the bees along with farming activities raises the production from 20 to 200 %. It was found that in UK, India and USA this bee population got decreased and it was pointed out that RFR from mobile phones and mobile towers could be responsible for the reduction in numbers of bee population.
It was said that Shrikant interests in bee keeping increased due to a five day course he underwent at a government institute in Pune after he completed studies at IIM Kozhikode. Some great facts about the bees and how they play important role in the ecological balance were taught and this increased his interests. It was said that Bee The Change played a great part in training around 500 farmers and forest population in the last few months.
Meeting the farmers and providing them the bee keeping boxes were done initially. Then once bee keeping was done the honey from bees were bought back at good rates thereby benefiting these farmers. It must be noted that apart from the proceedings of honey and wax sales other benefits like high returns, greater crop yields etc are also there.
Pesticides are avoided by these beekeeping farmers as they are harmful for the bees. Since keeping of bees is not an easy one and it involves amount farmers usually won’t show much interest. Problems like cost of the Bee box and time taken for honey production reduces the interest of the farmers and one in ten only involve themselves in this beekeeping process.
In case of forests population different process is followed by Shrikant and his team. Natural honey hunting techniques were taught initially where honey is extracted without any harm being done to the bee population.
Many problems such as lack of training facilities for bee keeping, unavailability of bee colonies, language problems, and fund limitations were cited as some hurdles this Bee the Change faced. It must be noted that by getting trained and by working with experts the hurdles were broken. It was also said that this organization of Shrikant is having plans to start training groups for women for the production of wax based cosmetics and organic based honey. Great work Shrikant!!
