In 1987, Moni Varma founded Veetee (Veetee name includes both “V” for “Varma” and “T” for “Thapar” – his family in India) Initially the company just sold basmati rice on small scale targeting the London market. Veetee Rice Ltd is today the largest rice supplier in the UK retail trade housing variety of rice from Basmati to microwaveable rice to Thai rice suiting everyone’s taste buds.
Born in India,Varma is the youngest of eight children.His father was an electrical engineer and mother was a housewife.He lived in Malawi(ex-Nyasaland) in Southeastern Africa and later on moved to UK.He never wanted to sell rice and wanted to become an engineer and set up steel industry, however his destiny took a different turn.
Veetee is currently the largest rice supplier in the UK retail trade with factories based out of India and Pakistan. Majority of UK stores right M&S and Tesco to Waitrose, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s if its rice, it has to be the rice from Veetee. It has penetrated US market too from Walmart, Kroger to Harris Teeter everyone loves Veetee rice.
Varma also has a rice mill, a cashew nut farm and pulses plant in Malawi, Africa .He also owns a paint factory.
Varma owns 2 houses in Middlesex and other in Mayfair. where he and his family lives.His kids work as Deputy Chairman at Veetee. His keen interest is cricket, he also plays golf.
Veetee’s vision is to be the key player in international market.His success mantra is we need to take risk, since by taking risk we might lose few thousands, but not taking the risk will result in loss in billions. Veetee Rice Ltd is featured in The Sunday Times International Track 200, taking 122nd place within the 2015 league table.
