Ours is a country where art is deeply respected and keenly followed. We have a plethora of Indian artists that are gifted with the skill of crafting magic on the canvas. Still, in terms of recognition and interest, Indian art tend to fall just few notches short.
Unlike abroad, where art-galleries are norm, the scene in India has just now started to bend in that direction. Thanks to people such as Neha Kirpal.
Neha is the founder-director of India Art Fair. She is the person responsible for putting up a world-class art-fair, which is the fifth-most frequented in the world!
If you reckon Neha hails from a lineage of artists and so she decided to go down this path, then no she isn’t. By background, she was a Political Science student while in college at Lady Sri Ram in Delhi. Family-wise, they are all business-oriented. Except Neha, of course.
Her interest in setting up an Art Fair in India happened when she returned to India from London. The story began in 2008. “I was returning to India after studying in London, totally enamored by the dynamic art scene there. There were thousands of galleries and hundreds of art fairs and I just could not fathom why we didn’t have something similar. It was an ambitious dream but I wanted to create a world class art event in India. I wrote out the business plan of an art fair on the back of an airsickness bag, even though I didn’t know a soul in the art fraternity here.”
The brand India Art Fair is seven-years-old now, and the biggest and most successful art-gathering in the country.
Even after all the accolades coming her way, Neha says she can never let complacency set in. In her words, her biggest challenge is to keep ‘it’ going.
