Here’s a story:
A young boy, son of a Coolie-father, and a mother who never got a chance to go to school. The young lad wasn’t very academically-inclined either. He would just manage to scrape through with adequate scores, and then he failed 6th grade. He decided to take a drop and assist his father, a coolie. But that didn’t happen. Instead a question coming from his Maths teacher, Sir Mathews, changed the young boy’s life forever.
The question was: “Do you want to be a coolie or a teacher?”
The young boy answered, “Sir, I want to be a teacher like you.”
Thereon the boy was tutored by Sir Mathews during after-school hours. The young boy’s determination showed as he topped in class 7 next year, repeating his top-act in class 10 as well.
He took admission in Farooq College in Kozhikode and stepped out of his village for the first time in his life.
Post-graduation, he moved to the US where he got placed in Manhattan Associates, an Indian start-up in the US. Then working with other companies took him to places like Ireland and Dubai. But all the while, he wanted to come to India.
During one random-conversation with his cousins back home in Kerala they tripped on an idea. “Shamsuddin, one of my cousins, had seen dosa batter being sold in plastic bags tied with a rubber band in nearby stores and suggested we make and supply dosa batter. That was an Aha! moment. I decided to invest ₹25,000 and start a company immediately.”
Today the small-start-up has grown into a Rs. 100-crore setup.
And the hero of this epic tale of is PC Musthafa.
His company, iD now supplies its goods to 400 shops and employs 30 personnel. PC Musthafa company’s products are making noise across the country now – Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.
Talking numbers, PC Musthafa said, “Today, we produce around 50,000 kg in our plant. The total investment must be around ₹4 crore (₹40 million) and our revenue is ₹100 crore (₹1 billion).”
And there were celebrations when iD touched the magic-figure. “We have grown from producing 10 packets a day in 2005, with just my cousin managing the kitchen, to 50,000 packets a day with 1,100 employees in 10 years,” beamed PC Musthafa.
