In the world of smartphones and tablets, it is hard to believe for some people that a remote village is information and technology deprived. Kallan, a resident of the same village bought a basic mobile phone but he was unable to connect to his family and relative. Later, someone from the surrounding village informed him about Radio Raja. Kallan now gets news updates and is a source of entertainment of him.
Radio Raja runs without a internet or radio frequency. Listeners just have to give a missed call on 1800 25 888 888 and the radio raja calls then back. One can listen to unlimited number of programmes free of cost. It requires no smartphone and can be accessed from any prepaid or post connection phone. Radio Raja gets around 2000 to 3000 calls everyday from the remotest village of MP, UP and Mahrashtra.
Radio Raja was established by Abhiram Bhise, an MTech degree holder. He started Radio Raja in a desire to work for an information deprive population. Radio Raja is an initiative that will grow into a internet based radio station with 24×7 services, with its focus only on the rural and remote areas. The market for the same is grand.
In a recent interview, Abhiram said, “As much as 70 per cent of the 1.28 billion Indian population resides in rural India. At least 45 per cent of rural areas are still waiting to get tapped by any media. That’s our target market where we plan to open up sub-stations in villages and blocks. We are working on technology enhancements to be able to provide selective infotainment as per the choice of the listeners,” adds Abhiram.
Radio Raja has produced several programmes. Each programme starts with a greeting and then it is followed by a bollywood or folklore song related to the same hamlet. There are also programmes on current affairs, healthcare, ayurveda tips, and many more. Radio raja for rural community has proved to be a useful tool to remain informed, update and also get entertained.
