Rustom is the upcoming Hindi movie casting Akshay Kumar in the lead role as Rustom Pavri. This film is based on real life story of a Naval Commander K. M. Nanavati, his wife Sylvia and his lover Prem Bhagwandas Ahuja. Commander Kawas Maneksaw Nanavati was a Parsi who joined Indian Navy and was happy in his life with his English wife Sylvia, two sons and a daughter.
Prem Ahuja was friend of KM Nanavati & he cheated him by having an affair with Nanavati’s wife Sylvia. Sylvia wanted to marry Prem but later she suspected whether Prem had the same intentions. One day when Nanavati came home he got to know his wife’s love affair with his friend. He was completely shocked. To his surprise his wife Sylvia confessed about having an affair with Prem.
Nanavati after dropping his family in a film theatre went to Prem’s house and asked him to marry his wife and accept his children. When Prem didn’t give a convincing reply, Nanavati fired three shot on Prem because of which Prem died on the spot. Ileana D’Cruz is playing character of Sylvia but his name in the film is Cynthia Pavri.
This incident was reported widely and got tremendous media attention. This case was heard by the jury but later was dismissed by Bombay High Court and was referred to a bench trial. This case became the reason for Government to abolish jury system in India. No case was later heard by jury after that.
The case K. M. Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra also raised many questions as whether the murder was done in ‘heat of the moment’ or as a planned move.
All this happened because Nanavati used to work away from home due to requirements of his job and in his absence his wife Sylvia fall in love with another colleague of Nanavati. She wanted to divorce Nanavati to marry Prem.
