Shefali Walia read a book ‘$100 startup’ and she was inspired by it that she decided to start a venture featuring two of her favorite words together. This is how WeTravelsolo.com was born.
The book emphasized that one should start a business which is close to one’s heart. Then she did some soul-searching and discovered that things such as travel, community building, social networking, and the desire to run a business, was where her heart was set. That was it. And the portal WeTravelSolo.com was born.
Today, WeTravelSolo.com is the country’s pioneer and premier online Solo Traveler Community that organizes special interest tours to satiate the thirst for perfect solo trip. Nothing quite comes close to the experience of travelling solo, after all.
The basic premise is to encourage people to travel solo and then become a part of a larger community consisting of solo travelers who can then connect with each other and comprehend each other’s travelling passions and provide experiential and budget travels crafted by other experienced individual travellers.
Prior to venturing out solo, Shefali, who was born and bred in Ambala, shifted to Delhi in 2008. She completed her MBA from Amity University. As her father was businessman, Shefali cradled fascination for business, advertising and marketing since her high-school days. After MBA, she got associated with the marketing and branding sector and consequently moved on to corporates. Her passion and acumen saw her handling Yebhi’s Pan-India offline marketing and strategic alliance.
Her experience in the sector came in handy when she decided to set foot in the market on her with WeTravelSolo.com
Many of the entrepreneurship-lessons she got wind of, helped her immensely when she set out on her own. Two of the most important lessons she implemented were: Firstly, hiring senior people right from the start of a venture helps greatly – specially in the growth stages of business – as they always carry a piece of the soul of the business with them. Secondly, its always a good idea not to drive yourself crazy running after the numbers.
As far milestones are concerned, the fact that Shefali did everything on her own, and most importantly putting up a business without financial backing is something she reckons as a benchmark for her.
And if you ask Shefali about the future, she tells you that its always best to have a goal clear in your sights and know exactly what you want.
For all aspirants she has beautiful advice: “When you are passionate and driven, you just keep going and smaller and bigger problems become a daily affair. If anything the problems have only made me stronger.”
And compromising on quality is something she has never done and will never do. Because Shefali is a strong-headed independent woman who will stick with her beliefs irrespective of circumstances – and that’s the only way to climb up in life.
