The 2015 World Junior Badminton Championship had a surprise runner-up in store in the form of Siril Varma who had stormed into the finals on the basis of some terrific performances. Though Siril ultimately lost to Chia-Hung Lu of China, he had won many hearts due to his fabulous effort.
Siril was born on 25th December 1999 in Andhra Pradesh and was a keen badminton enthusiast from his early years. Dedication and continuous practice gave Siril the fruits of his effort in the form of wins at many local championships before he won his first major tournament- Junior Under-15 Asian Badminton Championship in 2013. He did not stop at this victory and won the Badminton Asia Youth Championship in the same year and became the first Indian player to do so.
2015 was a watershed year for Siril as he has won the All India Junior Badminton tournament that was held in Kochi. But this win wasn’t an easy won as he had been hospitalized in the earlier week due to exhaustion from playing 10 matches within a span of three days. But his steely resolve and commitment drove him as he came back strongly to win the finals against another champion in the making-Lakshya Sen.
Although young Siril won the silver medal at the 2015 World Junior Badminton Championship, he did not give up before going down valiantly in a tightly contested fight against the Chinese Taipei shuttler, Chia-Hung Lu, that lasted for three sets.
