Tamil Nadu’s Public Distribution System- Strengthening of Universal Salt Iodization

Shocking news is Tamil Nadu inspite of being a salt producing state that supplies 16% of the country of India’s iodized salt it is now confirmed that only 41% of households in Tamil Nadu consume iodized salt and 35% take non-iodized salt and create many iodine deficiency disorders in the kids.

Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation founded by the Tamil Nadu government to address the iodine deficiency problems has started to produce affordable iodized crystal salt to the consumers. The video shows how sensitization and trainings of the functionaries have helped in the indent of iodized salt in the Public Distributing System. It must be noted that the trainings were aimed at sensitization of Iodine deficiency disorders, supply chain of salt etc. It is interesting to note that the major goal of this objective is using fair price shops to increase the sales of the iodized salt apart from targeting the salesmen in the eleven selected districts.

According to Srinivas CEO Frontier Growth Advisors spoke of lack of awareness of iodine deficiency disorders, supply chain issue and others like categorization of iodised salts etc. Job Zachariah chief state officer for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, UNICEF India expressed his thoughts regarding this issue and said how UNICEF had given its support. He also shed light on Arasu Salt consumption in below poverty line or bpl families. It must be noted that the sales of Arasu salt has now gone up and many people purchase this salt now from the shops.
