Traffic-woes are something Indians deal with on a daily-basis. As much as the commuters would like to reach their destination in the shortest time, traffic does not let that happen, and commuters are stuck in the traffic-rut. Furthermore, traffic plays villain as it causes air-pollution, disturbing the eco-system. Of course one would suggest people travel in hybrid-vehicles but that is a distant dream, still.
People opt out of hybrid-cars mainly because they feel design and aesthetics are comprised, and its not car if it’s not good-looking.
In a bid to change that mentality and push Indians to become more environment-conscious two entrepreneurs in Bangalore are have raised a whooping $13 million to design an electric-scooter.
Tarun and Swapnil are partners and owners of Ather Energy. Their alliance happened as they sat in the same classroom Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai. Much before developing a fetish for electric vehicles, the duo toyed with the idea of selling batteries. But both lads soon realized that customers did not want a DIY-remedy. They wanted a finished product.
Talking about their company ‘Ather Energy’, they say that the name is derived from Greek origins, “aether” or the cleanest air possible.
Both Tarun and Swapnil are students of product-design, so getting pulled towards this idea was natural. “We are students of product design and circumstances brought us in front of a lot of EV owners and we could see a product gap. They were evangelists of the technology but hated the product.”
