A man with courage, will power and uses his knowledge to escape from life crisis never has failed. One such man is Uddhab Bharali from Assam. The mechanical engineer is an inventor of no less than 118 innovations since the 1980s.
Born in a very poor family in the year 1962, Bharali was academically extraordinarily bright when he was young. In the Government Secondary School, Lakhimpur, where he did his schoolings, he was often asked by his teacher to stand outside the class because he asked ‘difficult questions’ in mathematics. Due to his extreme brilliance, he was rewarded with double promotions twice at school. The higher class students would come to him to solve difficult problems.
Bharali graduated from school at the age of 14, but had to drop out of engineering college because he could not afford to pay the fees and had to care of his family. In 1987, pressure created in the family as debts rose and the bank authorities asked them to vacate their home. He decided to start a polyethene making business. Instead of buying machines for lakhs of rupees, he designed his own machine for only about 67,000 rupees. It was just a beginning and since then, the list of his innovations kept on increasing.
In 1995, Bharali lost his elder brother to liver sclerosis and all family responsibilities fell on his head. At this difficult situation, he pledged not only to earn enough to bear his family, but also to help save the lives of others living below the poverty line.
In 2005, Bharali’s talent came to the attention of the National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad and they took him aboard as a grassroots innovator. He designed a pomegranate de-seeding machine for the first time not only in India, but also across the world.
Bharali is now a recipient of numerous awards. He has received ‘President’s Grassroots Innovation Award’ (2009), ‘Shristi Samman Award’ (2007), NASA Tech’s ‘Create the Future Design Contest’ (2012 and 2013) and ‘Rashtriya Ekta Samman (2013).
Uddhab Bharali’s next plan is to set up an old-age home and an orphanage. He has bought a small plot for this purpose. He has plans to bring up the orphan as technical expert.
The strong determination and the confident spirit in him have took Uddhab Bharali to the next level.
