Vasudeo S. Gaitonde: A record for an Indian painting work

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde A record for an Indian painting work

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde India’s greatest abstract painter still lives through his works. This was evident when this abstract artist’s oil painting recently at Christie auction in Mumbai was sold for amazing 293 million rupees or 4.4million USD. By this unbelievable amount that his painting got it has now set a new world record for an Indian art. It must be noted that the previous record was held by Francis Newton Souza who was paid 4.01million USD for his artwork in New York, USA.

It is known that the auction took place in Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. An international collector whose name was not revealed purchased Vasudeo’s oil painting for this stupendous amount. According to William Robinson, Christy international head of world art statement the amount was world record for an Indian work of art at auction.

It must be noted that abstract art utilizes visual language consisting of shape, form, colour etc to produce an art form. There is a departure from reality in these abstract arts. Vasudeo Gaitonde is considered as one of India’s greatest abstract painters ever. This oil painting from Vasudeo was created in the year 1995. In the year 2013 Vasudeo’s 1979 painting was sold 237 million rupees at Christie’s first sale and it was a record at that time. This record was beaten by an artwork by Goa based Souza in September 2015.

The auction recently held was third such from Christie and it wants to utilize India’s rich middle class groups. A staggering amount of 980 million rupees was got through the auctions as per William Robinson of Christy. As per the latest statement issued by Robinson this amount is the highest Christie had achieved from India. It is said that Christy is the world’s largest auction house. It is known that Vasudeo Gaitonde passed away in 2001 but his artworks speak volumes of his talent. We Indians feel proud of you sir.
