US Visa: Over 2-Year Wait For New Delhi, Just 2 Days For Beijing

According to a US government website, Indian visa applicants must wait more than two years merely to have an appointment, compared to just two days for countries like China.

According to the US State Department website, there is an appointment wait period of 833 days for applications from Delhi and 848 days from Mumbai for visiting visas. In contrast, Beijing’s wait time is merely two days while Islamabad’s wait time is 450 days.

For Delhi and Mumbai, the wait time for student visas is 430 days. Surprisingly, Beijing has two days, whereas Islamabad only has one.

While visiting the US, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar yesterday brought up the backlog in visa applications with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The senior US ambassador declared that he is “very sensitive” to the problem and that there are parallel challenges around the world brought on by Covid.

Blinken Statement :

He said that the US has a strategy to deal with the backlog of Indian visa requests. We’re quite focused on that, but I believe you’ll see how that plays out in the upcoming months, said Blinken.

According to insiders, the delay results from a reduction in staff handling the visa procedure as a result of fewer applications during the pandemic. They explain that the delay was cause by an increase in applications for both student and tourist visas during the post-Covid era because they lacked enough workers.

For most of the pandemic, the US Mission in India was open; however, the number of applicants that could b accept each day was limit by regional restrictions, such as lockdowns and social distance limits, according to US embassy spokesperson Chris Elms.

According to him, processing of all immigrant and nonimmigrant visa categories has begun, for both new and repeat applicants.

We were able to grant a record number of over 82,000 student visas this summer because we gave students the highest priority to guarantee they were on time for class. This year, more Indian students than those from any other nation are studying in the US as a result, he claimed.
